how much did Fred invest in the 6% bond?2.The new rectangular shopping center is 60 feet longer than 2.5 times its width. If the perimeter is 1,100 feet,......
1.)Translate the word problem into an equation; then solve.

Fred invested $25,000 in two different types of bonds. The first type earned 6% interest (profit) and the second type earned 9% interest. If the interest on the 9% bond was $750 more than the interest on the 6% bond, how much did Fred invest in the 6% bond?

2.)Translate the word problem below into a equation; then solve

The new rectangular shopping center is 60 feet longer than 2.5 times its width. If the perimeter is 1,100 feet, what is the shopping center's width?

1) X = amount invested in the 6% bond

X(6%) + (25000-X)(9%) = 2(X(6%)) +750 <-- the right hand side basically says that the interest you will get in total from both bonds is twice the interest on the 6% + the additional 750 more from the 9% bond
X(6%) + (25000-X)(9%) = 12%+750
25000(9%) - 750 = 15%X
1500 = 15%X
X = 10000

So you invest 10,000 in the 6% bond and 15000 in the 9% bond

2) Rectangular shopping center is 60ft longer than 2.5W
L = 2.5W + 60

Perimeter = 2L + 2W
1100 = 2L + 2W
Substitute equation L=2.5W+60
1100 = 2(2.5W+60) + 2W
1100 = 5W+120 + 2W
1100 = 7W+120
7W = 980
W = 140feet
