I hate asking so many questions, but I missed this day and the book isn't really helpful with this particular question.
I'm completely lost.

A quadratic equation is of the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0.
If p and q are the solutions, then ax^2 + bx + c = (x - p)(x - q).
So if i and -i are the solutions:
(x - i)(x + i)
= x^2 - i^2
= x^2 + 1.
The quadratic equation with solutions i and -i is x^2 + 1 = 0.
