there are 6 possible numbers you could roll on the white die. Lets say you get a 1 on the red die.(1,1), (1,2),......
a) How many possible outcomes are there? Explain how you get your answer
b) What is the probability that the dice show a total of 8?
c)What is the probability that the dice show a total less than 5?

There are 36 possible outcomes. For any number you get on the red die, there are 6 possible numbers you could roll on the white die. Let's say you get a 1 on the red die. The possible outcomes are
(1,1), (1,2), (1,3), (1,4), (1,5), (1,6), where the first number is the outcome for the red die and the second number is the outcome for the white die.

So, 6 outcomes for each number on the red die and 6 numbers of the red die means 6*6 = 36 outcomes.

Let's think of all the ways we can get a total of 8:
(2,6), (6,2)
(3,5), (5,3)
(4,4)

There are 5 ways, so the probability is 5/36

Write down all the ways we could get a total less than 5:
(1,1), (1,2), (1,3)
(2,1), (2, 2)
(3, 1)

There are 6 ways, so the probability is 6/36 = 1/6

there are 36 outcomes (6 times 6)
to have a total of 8, you have 2+6, 3+5, 4+4, 5+3, 6+2 so the prob is 5/36
less than 5, 1+1,1+2,1+3, so 6/36 = 1/6
