(3a^1/3-2b^1/3)(4a^1/3-b^1/3)

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-11-04] [Hit: ]
in this case there is 2*2 = 4,answers to each of the above,......
Multiplication with Rational Exponents.. I understand how the first term is 12a^2/3 and last is 2b^2/3..im SO confused on how the middle is 11a^1/3b^1/3.. please show the steps.
This is my first time using Yahoo answers =]

You need to multiple everything from each bracket with everything from the other.

So you got the 12a^2/3
then you multiply 3a^1/3 by -b^1/3 which equals -3a^1/3b^1/3
then you multiply -2b^1/3 by 4a^1/3 which equals -8a^13b^1/3
then you got the 2b^2/3

when you add the two middle terms I explained, you get -11a^1/3b^1/3.

So, the final answer is 12a^2/3-11a^1/3b^1/3+2b^2/3
I hope you understand!

(3a^1/3-2b^1/3)(4a^1/3-b^1/3)?

Fid out how many terms there are in each parenthesis, in this case there is 2*2 = 4, so this problem will have 4 factors to multiply:

3a^1/3*4a^1/3

3a^1/3*-b^1/3

-2b^1/3*4a^1/3

-2b^1/3*-b^1/3

answers to each of the above, in order are:

3a^1/3*4a^1/3 = 3*4*a^1/3*a^1/3 commutative law

= 12a^2/3

next answer is -3a^1/3*b^1/3 = -3*(ab)^1/3 a^1/3*b^1/3 = (ab)^1/3 there are two variables in this factor so you need to look at the a's and b's separately

next -8*(ab)^1/3

final is 2b^2/3
