..and Im stuck now...March 21 is National Teenagers Day.......
Hi,

I can't seem to figure out how to approach this problem other than it's a rectangle of 45 x 100 ft and each person need 9ft squared, which would mean 500 people can fit on it. But the teacher said the answer is not 500....and I'm stuck now...

March 21 is National Teenagers Day. A group of teens decide to hold a parade. They build a platform that is 45 ft by 100 ft. Each person needs an area of 3 ft by 3ft to stand on. How many people can fit on the float? (HINT: THE ANSWER IS NOT 500).

Well, one way to do it is to assume that it is a rectangle. Since 45/3 = 15, it is possible to put 15 people in the the narrow direction. Now 100/3 = 33 with 1 foot wasted. So, 33 columns of 15 people = 33*15 = 496 people will fit for sure. Some clever way not using rows and columns might squeeze in one more person, but I don't think I'll worry about that.
