I think these are all right if they are really confusing Im sorry! Just let me know.......
John$ = 8x ; x = 9

John$ = 8*9 = 72$

Similarly, we can find the amount of money Fred has before John gives him 6$:

Fred$ = 3x ; x = 9

Fred$ = 3*9 = 27$

3. I wrote and solved the following equation for this problem:

42t + 38t = 400

80t = 400

t = 5 hours

The two cars will meet after 5 hours.

-
R=rate
D=distance
T=time

D1+d2=1400
t1=t2
Rt=d
240xt1=d1
320xt2=d2 ===> 320xt1=d2 ===> 320xt1=1400-d1 ===> 320xt1-1400=-d1 ===> -320xt1+1400=d1
240xt1=-320xt1+1400 ===> 560xt1=1400 ===> t1=2.5
2.5 hours.

X=john's money y=fred's money
3x=8y
x-6=2(y+6)
x-6=2y+12
x-2y=18
3x-6y=54 ===> 8y-6y=54
2y=54
y=27
3x=8(27)
3x=216
x=72
$72.

D1+d2=400
t1=t2
42xt1=d1
38xt2=d2 ===> 38xt1=d2 ===> 38xt1=400-d1 ===> 38xt1-400=-d1 ===> -38xt1+400=d1
42xt1=-38xt1+400
80xt1=400
t1=5
Five hours after 1pm is 6pm
6pm.

I think these are all right if they are really confusing I'm sorry! Just let me know. Hope I helped (:
