1 mile = 8 furlongs = 8 (220 yards) = 8*220 (3 feet) = 8*220*3 feet = 5280 feet

It's not a matter of calculating it, it just is. How do you calculate how many inches are in a foot. It's twelve. There's no formula it's just a long time ago these standards were set and that's what they are. There's no magic formula. Our system of measurement is a hodgepodge of the desires of kings of old unlike metric which is based on math. A mile comes from the latin 'mil' or thousand. It was the distance Roman soldiers paces off in 1000 steps. There still are milestones (where our word milestone comes from) lining the Appian Way and other Roman roads. The actual distance considered a mile has changed over time. Obviously, a 5.2 foot step would require a giant.

You don't "calculate it" you measure it.

The statute mile was defined by an English Act of Parliament (hence the name) in 1592, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I as being 1,760 yards (5,280 feet, about 1609 metres). For surveying, the statute mile is divided into eight furlongs; each furlong is ten chains; each chain is four rods (also known as poles or perches); and each rod is 25 links. This makes the rod equal to 5½ yards or 16½ feet in both Imperial and U.S. usage.
