Is Northern America reallly more accepting and open-minded than Southern America? Or is it all a bunch of crap?

Every region has communities that demonstrate, by the laws they pass and the types of institutions they have, that they have a predominance of either open-minded or close-minded people. But those traits are, for the most part, personal characteristics, so it is not valid to stereotype such large groups of people, trying to paint their attitudes with the same broad brush.
I can't even say my family is more open minded than the family of my best friend, because we each have both open- and close-minded family members. Bottom line: Stereotyping other people never works because as soon as someone tries to do that, someone else can point out examples of people who don't fit the stereotype.
