Every time a british celebrity pops on some show he says what county he was born in...
for example Richard Hammond said he grew up in Yorkshire (which is a county...)
Jeremy Clarkson (sorry, I watch Top Gear a lot...) said that he lives in Oxfordshire ,
which again is a county... Why can't they say the name of the city ??
Searched on the internet what's the difference but didn't find an answer...
So... What is the difference ?

They live in the rural countryside not in cities.
Yorkshire is Englands largest (old) county covers a large land area, including a dozen cities. Yorkshire is divided up into a number of administrative counties. Pride amongst Yorkshirefolk is often so high that they regard themselves as Yorkshire nationals.
Counties (historically known as shires) are admistrative regions of a country. They will contain one or more cites and many town and villages.
A City is clearly defined urban area. Almost all cities have cathedrals. Most cities have large populations ( over 300,000) compared with towns which are smaller.
Historically Yorkshire was divided into 4 Ridings, North, South, East and West. These are not used for administration, but locals are still very attatched to them as the culture and geography is quite different in each Riding. East Riding is rarely used, as it has been mostly swallowed up by the new region of Humberside. Humberside also includes part of North Lincolnshire.

Perhaps because of the broader appeal and the attributes of people they themselves identify with.
I also watch Top Gear - great isn't it. I not so much interested in the cars (which I generally can't afford anyway) but for the comedy aspect. I mean, where else could you see a Robin Reliant strapped to a mini version of the space shuttle?
