Climate, terrain, and opportunity.
How areas of high or low population came about: If a group cannot survive with the resources they are able to gather and cultivate, they will migrate to sustain their population. What is modern-day Northern Canada, for example (or you could say the same about Siberian Russia), has a low population density because the climate (cold) and terrain (glaciers scraped away all of the top soils, leaving bare rock -- this pushing down of top fertile soils is what allowed for America's heavy Midwestern crop production) are not conducive to agricultural production that would support population growth.
These populations were kept in these locations as industry boomed. To cut transit costs, industries would be built where either A) their products/services were in demand (i.e. near a metropolis) or B) where resources to production were easily gathered (i.e. a watermill would build near a river). Industries bring jobs; jobs provide opportunities for people. People show up = population density high. With regard to Canada's high population density nearest the US border and along the coasts, this is due to climate, as well as the fact that the US hit industrialization before Canada, which brings us back to the idea of opportunity and production.

China is so densely populated because of many reasons such as it has a lot of jobs there which people in poor, sparsely populated countries find a pull factor. Also they have good entertainment in china and services such as education, hospital, fire department etc. So people feel safer there. It also has a variety of climate and land use. China has very nice scenery and landscapes which a lot of people will find amazing. They also have a variety of natural resources. China has a natural environment which makes it easier for a height population to live there.

china and india are old nations with each having an recorded history of 4000 yrs. canada has about 500 yrs of recorded history. besides, the area for agricultural land in canada is smaller than in china and india.
