Transformer is a static device which transforms electrical energy from one circuit to another without any direct electrical connection and with the help of mutual induction between two windings. It transforms power from one circuit to another without changing its frequency but may be in different voltage level. The working principle of transformer based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction.

Step-up transformer
◄A step-up transformer is one whose secondary voltage is greater than its primary voltage.

Step-down transformer.
◄Its the opposite of the above, i.e transformer is one whose primary voltage is greater than its secondary voltage.

A transformer is an electrical device used in Alternating current circuits to raise or lower voltage. A step up transformer raises the voltage. A step down transformer lowers the voltage.

The transformer is constructed of two coils, the primary coil and the secondary coil. Power is supplied to the primary coil which creates a pulsating magnetic field as the current alternates. This induces a current in the secondary coils to send power out the secondary side. The number of difference in the number of winds in the coil accounts for the change in voltage.

Generators commonly produce 13.8 Kilo volts of electricity. This voltage is commonly stepped down to 2300 volt, 440 volt and 120 volts using transformers.
