I know what maximum allowable working pressure means as well as design pressure for tanks. How does this value fit in? What is the vessel rated pressure really? The units for this term are in psig.

"Vessel rated pressure" is the same as "maximum allowable working pressure."

I believe the term "rated pressure" is not a valid term under the ASME pressure vessel code.
I have heard people talk about the "pressure rating" of a vessel but that is always the MAWP.
I have seen vessels that start out in the design and fabrication process to have a "design pressure" that is different than the MAWP. Sometimes because of circumstances the various parts that are purchased to make a vessel turn out to be more than that required by the design. The result is a vessel with a greater strength than the design pressure. In that case the MAWP can be stamped to match the higher pressure.

A vessel is initially designed using the Design Pressure as a basis in all the equations for minimum material thicknesses.
After the vessel has been designed and the actual material thicknesses have all been established, the MAWP is then calcularted based on actual material thicknesses used in the construction of the vessel.
The Maximum Allowable Working Pressure is the reference point for setting the maximum relief point of safety relief valves for the vessel.
