I've always wondered why some gas masks have a filter and others have a hose and then a filter. Does it further purify the air? Or does it make it easier to move/carry? Please help!

In general, the canister connected with a hose is much heavier than the filters actually ON the mask. The canister on the end of a hose is usually supported by a belt or harness so the hose does not take the weight. It is NOT to change the location as another suggested, nor is a drinking tube, though a gas mask MAY have a separate drinking tube to bypass the mask without having to remove it. Some masks may also have a tube for an external air supply as well.

Rolfe is correct.
A good filter can be rather heavy and awkward, so by moving the filter to the belt you can use a filter up to 10 lbs that processes more gases and lasts longer than a face cartridge

The purpose of a hose on a gas mask is to allow the place of air intake to be lower than where gases generally reside in a room. Gases have a natural tendency to rise

So you can drink without removing the mask.
