An open-topped cylindrical tank is made of metal sheet having an area of 50.54 m^2. If the base diameter is 3/4 the height, what is the volume of the tank?

If the area of the sheet metal is the tank bottom plus the tank side - -
50.54 = pi/4 D^2 + pi D * h or
50.54 = pi /4 (.75h)^2 + pi (.75h) h = 0.44h^2 + 2.36h^2 = 2.8h^2
h^2 = 18.05 so h = 4.25
dia = (0.75) 4.25 = 3.19
vol. = pi/4 (3.19 )^2 * (4.25) = 39.97m^3
50.54 = pi/4 D^2 + pi D * h or

Shame on you for not checking. Bomba gets his final multipliction totally wrong!

Bramble is right. It should be 33.97

height = 4.25m: Area = π(4.25)².[9/64 + ¾] = 50.54: Volume = π.(4.25)³.(9/64). = 33.914 m³.
