The mesoamerican calendar has "ended" more than once. It's just the start of a new age. We do the same thing today with New Year's resolutions with the modern day calendar. It's symbolic. The only reason why people attach a lot of gravity to it is because the recycle of the mesoamerican calendar takes so long, and so people think it must be more significant. The world will end, just not in your lifetime. Most likely it will be distinguished when the sun expands, which is far from now.

No, the Mayan calendar is just the end of some kind of cycle. The world will end when the Sun gets too hot for life to survive for sure. Whether we destroy ourselves by war or nuclear weapons before then, is unknown.
