How high does the groundwater level need to be to dig a well and have it work

There is no actual height it varies from place to place.-If you are going to suck the water from the top, it cant be deeper than about 30 feet because of air pressure limits.But since most wells made these days hang the pump at the bottom of a long plastic pipe with a power line running down the side, so the pump is pushing the water up, it can be getting water from 100 or 200 feet down or more.......
It really depends on where the water table is at the lowest point in the year. So as long as your well is deep enough that when the water table is at its lowest your well is still full your golden. There is no actual "height" it varies from place to place.
