What magnitude is classified as a large earthquake

3 magnitude killed 181 people here in Christchurch, New-Zealand on February 22nd this year. It was shallow as most of our quakes and after shocks are. 4.9 or 5 can feel large as they are at a depth of about 5 kilometres. Im not an expert but I think fault lines are caused because of the earthquakes.......
generally large earthquakes are about what magnitude? Also does anyone know clearly what fault lines are because how do they actually make earthquakes occur???

Large earthquakes are usually magnitude 7 and over. They potentially cause serious damage over large areas. Earthquakes cause fault lines, not vice versa.
