When the nail was copper-plated in Part III of the lab, what element do you think was reduced? Explain your answer in complete sentences.

I have no idea here is the info for the lab:

When a nail or paper clip, made of an alloy that contains iron, is placed in an acidic solution containing copper ions, some of the iron oxide that coats the nail dissolved and a reaction occurs. Be sure to record all of your observations, and then identify which element is oxidized and which element is reduced. You will need all of these for the 7.06 assessment.

Redox reaction: Cu2+(aq) + Fe(s) --> Cu(s) + Fe2+(aq)

Procedure:

Place a nail or paper clip halfway in the solution, holding it there for several minutes. Place a second nail or paper clip completely in the solution for at least 10 minutes.
Record your observations while you wait. Do you see any bubbling or color change?
After 10 minutes have passed, remove the nail or paper clip and observe if any color change has occurred. If not, return it to the solution for another 10 minutes.
If no change has occurred after 20 minutes, try rubbing the nail lightly with sandpaper (to remove any protective coating) and repeating the procedure.

Reduction always results in a lowering of the oxidation number. In this reaction:

Cu2+(aq) + Fe(s) --> Cu(s) + Fe2+(aq)

the copper goes from +2 to zero. That's your reduction.

The iron is oxidized,going from zero to +2.

Ignore the dissolving of the iron oxide. That's a red herring. It's the iron metal (the Fe) in the paper clip (or nail) that gets oxidized.
