Equilibrium shift question!

(a) Addition of HCl will add excess Cl- ions to solution. The system will shift to remove some of those excess chloride ions by forming CuCl4.The solution might turn more green.(b) If you add silver nitrate, the silver ions in solution will form an insoluble salt or complex with the chloride ions, effectively removing them from solution.......
Given

CuCl4(aq)2- + 4H2O ⇌ Cu(H2O)4(aq) 2+ + 4Cl-

CuCl4(aq)2- is dark green
Cu(H2O)4(aq)2+ is blue

predict the shift in equilibrium if:
a) hydrochloric acid, HCl is added
b) silver nitrate, AgNO3 is added

-
Le Chatelier's principle...a system at equilibrium will act to restore that equilibrium if it is disturbed.

(a) Addition of HCl will add excess Cl- ions to solution. The system will shift to remove some of those excess chloride ions by forming CuCl4. The solution might turn more green.

(b) If you add silver nitrate, the silver ions in solution will form an insoluble salt or complex with the chloride ions, effectively removing them from solution. The system will respond by forming more chloride anions, driving equilibrium toward the right in your equation. The result will be more Cu(H2O)4 2+, and the solution will turn blue.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
