Chemical synthesis is basically carrying out a chemical reaction on purpose to make something. There are hundreds of processes which may be considered synthesis so in short, no it isn't just "mixing chemicals". We humans have discovered near to sixty million chemical compounds, to list all the reactions which take place between them and how they occur would be impossible
