How to convert an alcohol into an amide?
-
An amide can be synthesized from an amine and a carboxylic acid and an alcohol can be oxidized to a carboxylic acid. Chaining together these two processes, using the right reagents, will give you what you want.
Starting with ethanol, oxidize all the way, to carboxylic acid:
CH3CH2OH --> CH3COOH
Then react with methaneamine, to produce N-methyl-ethanamide:
CH3COOH + NH2CH3 --> CH3CONHCH3
See links for details on the reactions
