Need help on chemistry homework.

It's correct that you need to know the element first.
Divide the grams (0.850) by the Atomic Weight (g/Mol) to get number of moles.
Here's a coule of examples
Moles of H = .850 / 1.00794 g/mol = .843 mol
Moles of Fe = .850 g / 55.845 g/mol = .015 mol.

.850 grams of what?
you're missing something.
moles = grams/molecular weight
you're missing something.
moles = grams/molecular weight
-
0.850 grams of what? Each element/compound is different.
-
That would be 0.84 mole. Well, in Hydrogen, however. That's what I learned.

Grams of what element? you can't solve unless you know what element to solve it for!
