org/wiki/Caprylic_acid.The alpha carbon would be the one next to the carboxyl group...so the 7th carbon. Not the 8th as it is actually part of the functional group.......
My homework made sense up until this page. Please help, much appreciated.

The structure would be an 8 carbon chain with a double bond to O and an OH on the 8th carbon. You can see the structure here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caprylic_acid.

Alpha carbons are the first carbons attached to a functional group
