Snow algae (Chamydomonas nivalis) is photosynthetic and has a secondary red carotenoid pigment, astaxanthin, than protects the algae from the intense UV at high altitudes. Astaxanthin absorbs the dangerous UV energy and dissipates it as heat to melt the snow giving the algae liquid water to live in.
