A- Diffusion causes movement of materials toward equilibrium.
B- Diffusion of water cannot occur.
C- Diffusion can occur only through a membrane.

It is A, but I believe you should understand why!

Diffusion does indeed cause movement of materials from high concentration to lower concentration until an equilibrium is established and the concentration of materials is the same in both areas.

Water does indeed diffuse. If it is from an open container, lake or ocean it is called evaporation. If it is through a cell membrane, it is called osmosis.

Diffusion does not require a membrane. As I said, water molecules (just one example) can move upward into the atmosphere from the more closely concentrated surface of a lake or ocean, and there is no membrane involved. There are thousands of other examples which do not involve diffusion through a membrane, such as oil on water moving outwards from the concentrated area towards lesser areas of concentration (think of large oil tanker spills..this is why they are so devastating. It is very difficult to contain the oil molecules in the same general area because they diffuse outwards automatically.

Diffusion is passive. It is a process of a substance moving automatically from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. While there are examples of facilitated diffusion across cell membranes, diffusion in general does not require channels of any kind.

I hope this helped. I can't just say, 'it's A'; I'm a retired teacher, and I always want to explain why I chose my answer because I want you to understand it.

I believe it is answer A.
