Scientific research has been done that demonstrates moderate alcohol use in fact results in better cognitive skills and memory than no alcohol at all. Moderate drinking does not kill brain cells but helps them function better into old age. Of course, long term chronic drinking can damage the brain, and lead to disease for example, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. Harm can be done to the neurons but even in these cases there is a lack of evidence that alcohol actually kills them.

Smoking, on the other hand, has been found to contribute to brain cell death. A chemical compound, NNK, found in all forms of tobacco stimulates microglia cells. These cells usually act as the immune cells of the brain and clear up foreign material, but smoking stimulates their overuse, leading to destruction of healthy brain tissue. It also increases the risk of aneurysm, by increasing blood pressure, which is when blood vessels become weak and bulge. If they burst in the brain this leads to brain cells not getting enough oxygen and dying.
