Erica s say: It rather depends on who you ask. To many people, the word means as someone has said, everything there is. However, some theoretical physicists like myself, are discussing the possibility that our Universe
(note the upper case U) is only one among an unknown number of universes (lower case) contained in a much larger "space" which we call the Multiverse. This theory is usually known as Brane Theory, and those universes are known as "branes". This partly a development of M Theory first proposed in 1995 at a presentation give by Edward Witten at a conference I was lucky enough to attend at USC as a Phd student. It was partly a development of superstring theory, which unified the 5 separate but consistent string theories of the time. Some of us picked it up and ran with it, but we still don't know where it will lead.

The earliest scientific models of universe were developed by ancient greek and Indian philosopher and were geocentric placing earth at the center of the universe.
