We don't know what the surface of Earth was like prior to the moon. The moon was formed after a Mars-sized object hit the Earth, and liquefied our planet; prior to the impact, we assume that Earth, Mars, and Venus were all somewhat similar, probably a moderate atmosphere that was nitrogen/CO2 based; but... with all the evidence destroyed, we honestly can't say it was with certainty.

Not likely, because at that time the Earth was still forming. The heat of all the planetesimals hitting the Earth would have made the surface basically one huge sea of magma.

In the beginning the Earth was a formless void.
