If these were real, they were probably sun dogs, also known as parhelia, most usually seen when the Sun is low and when there are tiny ice crystals in the air.

It is not true. The next nearest star is something like 4.2 light years away, if there were other subs near everyone on earth would have been able to see them and the temperature if the planet would have risin significantly.
