I know be waste of time and money !!! Mean ya have to be dumb to think were the only ones out there. All us humans do is kill, fight, hurt maybe others don't want anything to do with us.
-
It would be a long ride home.
-
We just tell them, ...
"god gave this land to me"
and we convert them to our way of thinking.
If they won't agree with us we'll bomb them back to the stone age.
That's the way we've always settled territorial disputes in the past.
Anyway __
if we were smart we would send an unmanned probe there first to check out the lay of the land.
I mean, we'd look a bit foolish if we landed there only to find out the surface temperature was 500 C

hopefully the people who go will be better than the average "we deserve this land because they're primitives" or "mane fest destiny" attitudes types and hopefully by than we'll have learned from history not to let that type of thing happen

I think developing a technology that would allow us to travel such distances would be such a great achievement, that one single setback as you describe would be considered to be very minor.
-
Discovering intelligent life on another planet would hardly be a setback. That's like drilling for oil and finding gold instead.
-
We would have advanced technology so they wouldnt send us back. We would be the dominant species and either make peace with them or conquer like we do through out history.
-
When we get to Gliese 581g they will welcome us and tell us they will serve Mankind. ....... on a plate for supper.
