What is this "galactic alignment"

people have been asking about the galactic alignment. Someone please define what is lining up? Is it to be assumed that the earth is destroyed any time objects in space line up? And third question, what are they lining up for? I mean are they going to be checking out groceries or something?

the galactic alignment is when our sun is aligned with the dark rift of our galaxy. Supposedly when both are aligned they will send some kind of gamma rays invisible to us to our earth and it will cause catastrophic disasters, similar to other alignments that have been predicted to cause disasters on earth but so far nothing major has happened. Much can be expected for this alignment.

Because the plane of the ecliptic (where the Sun appears to move across the sky) and the plane of the Galaxy are at an angle to each other, the Sun appears to cross the galactic equator (really just an arbitrary line in the sky) twice a year, on June 21 and December 21. The point where the two cross in December happens to be close (about 6 degrees off) to the centre of the Galaxy. This is all of academic interest only, since we can't actually _see_ the Milky Way when the Sun is near it, and the centre of the Galaxy exerts virtually unmeasurable gravitational pull on the Earth. Although it is massive, the centre is so far away as to be negligible.

There is absolutely no physical reason why this "alignment" should have any effect on Earth. It is just the same as all the rest of the "2012" hoax.

The closest thing to a galactic alignment occurred back in 1998. Did you notice it? No. Noticed anything remarkable taking place in the sky? Planets wandering off course? The Sun looking larger than usual? Pink comets? No.
That shows you how much effect these events have on us.

Some people have said it will happen again this year because (a) they are ignorant of the facts, or (b) they know it won't really happen, but are tying it into the next cycle of the Mayan calendar in order to sell their books which are full of rubbish about the so-called "end of the world".
