How can we see the centre of the Milky Way

I thought that was an optical telescope and that there was dust in the way so we could not see the centre of our own galaxy.http://www.sciencemag.(I think if I mess around I might get access via a local university, but just wondered if anyone had a quick answer)-The quick answer is that theyre looking in the infrared, where the dust is considerably less opaque.......
I just heard about some researchers that found a star orbiting the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, using the Keck telescope. I thought that was an optical telescope and that there was dust in the way so we could not see the centre of our own galaxy.
