I just heard about some researchers that found a star orbiting the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way, using the Keck telescope. I thought that was an optical telescope and that there was dust in the way so we could not see the centre of our own galaxy.

(I think if I mess around I might get access via a local university, but just wondered if anyone had a quick answer)

The quick answer is that they're looking in the infrared, where the dust is considerably less opaque.
