As already noted - your best 'first telescope' is a pair of binoculars. (You may already have it in your house!)
The telescopes sold at the big box stores (Walmart, Kmart, Sears, Target, etc) are pretty much universally junk. They have small apertures (the most important thing to consider in your fist, and second, and possibly even your third telescope(s) ), cheap optics (usually of mediocre quality at best), and flimsy, shaky tripod mounts. They may ''look' like a telescope - but they are about as much a 'real telescope' as a scooter with a 10 horsepower engine is a 'real motorcycle'.

Binoculars are relatively cheap, and even the fairly cheap ones ($30 - $50) are reasonably decent quality for amateur astronomy.

Get some books on astronomy and sky-gazing (your local library is a great resource) and possibly some (free!!) planetarium software - Stellarium is one of the programs recommended by several of the regulars in this forum.

See if you can locate a nearby amateur astronomy club - - see what telescopes they have - learn from them - and learn what mistakes they made when they started out - and get their recommendations. (You might even be able to buy one of their old telescopes as they upgrade to larger sizes).

If you absolutely *must* rush out and buy a telescope - there are a few reasonable options that get recommended by regulars here. Personally, I recommend that you get a 6inch or 8 inch Dobsonian mounted Newtonian reflector telescope. (Just google search for 6 inch Dobsonian or 8 inch dobsonian - - Meade and Orion are two of the big names, you might also look at the Zhumell scopes)
Expect this to set you back about $300 - $400.
