Stars form within vast clouds of interstellar dust and gas called 'nebulas.' Due to gravity, the gas and dust slowly accretes into a large sphere. As more and more nebula material is added to the sphere, its central temperature rises due to compression. If the temperature reaches a high enough value (..about 18-million Fahrenheit..) nuclear fusion will begin and a new star is born.
