I'd stop short of calling him a "media whore." After all it's a job, and I'm sure he gets paid pretty well. I'd also stop way short of calling him "brilliant," even though you've got to have a good share of smarts of pull down the degree(s) he has.
I agree too with another responder to your question --- he's obviously thoroughly impressed with himself. Kind of a legend in his own mind so to speak.
I too have learned a lot from him but I think he may be a little bit of both. It is just like how Bruce lee is considered by many to be the greatest martial artist, so to speak. Was he? Probably not, there have probably been many greater than he. My point is that popularity and fame of one person can become a shadow over other people that are just as great or perhaps even greater. It's like a darkroom full of people where one person is in the spotlight. This person is the only one you see, but you usually still need to work hard to get there. That being said, I believe he is a little bit of both.
He falls short of both claims, but on the continuum, I feel he is closer to the ridiculous than to the brilliant.
I'd say he's a bit of both.
