What the use of having it?
One reason is purely financial. There are better ways of spending money then spending billions of dollars in metal into space.
Second reason is why?
Almost every time NASA or some other scientist organization wants to spend money its to help find the history of the universe. That's there go to excuse. Been using it for years. Guess what? We still don't know anything conclusive then we did pre NASA. They have theories, but that's not conclusive. They have facts, but that doesn't really help anyone. Does it really matter that we know the exact number of asteroids the are in the world?
Honestly, whats the use of the space program?
I did ask this to push your buttons, but I do want answers. I know some people will view this as a stupid question. Or that if I don't get it then I never will so you shouldn't even bother answering. If you take that view then that it's stupid because I (as a tax payer) am putting money into the space program so I should question where its going or if it should be going.

Go ahead! The other nations will miss you for a while, but just a little while. In the meantime, move over and prepare to be overtaken by Europe -- or China, if the Euro ends up tanking.
One of the significant interests of investing in science, and particularly in space, is the Military. One example is the GPS, which was developed originally as a way to help locate and guide nuclear submarines in high sea, where they have no landmarks to orient on. You put in a little money (yes, compared to other budgets it IS little money!) on one hand, the egg-heads produce a lot of trash but once in a while out comes a gold nugget. It's a long-term investment.
