I mean, there couldn't have been 'nothing' otherwise there wouldn't be US. But is it really even possible to know what was there? I don't see how it could be possible. So my question is: will we ever know what was before it, and what are your personal theories as to what was before it?

What was there before the "Big Bang"?
Well, the most logical answer to your question would be other universes.
As they say that our universe is flat, our universe must be part of a "multiverse".
It has been depicted by scientists that we are in the middle of a "stack" of universes.
Like, the 1st Dimension, 2nd Dimension, etc...
The "Big Bang" was the start of our universe. Maybe other "Big Bangs" happened to start the other universes depending on what their dimension is. My students and I have discussed this topic many times in class.( I'm a professor.) I hope this was helpful.

There certainly could have been nothing; our universe was formed in the big bang, and thus here we are. That doesn't mean there's anything outside the universe; who knows if anything outside the universe has to obey the laws inside our universe.
Yes, it's possible we'll figure it out. For example, some things aren't confined to our universe - as far as we can tell, gravitational waves would travel outside our universe, and it's possible to detect them from outside our universe. However, our best chance at doing that was on the chopping block (the LISA observatory) so either we'll have to hope ESA will fund it themselves without NASA's help, or wait another 20+ years until we can afford it.

Actually, I heard some kid there in the US with an IQ higher than Einstein claimed that the big bang never happened. So we don't even know if there was a big bang. We don't know if there's some 'glorious heaven', a 'god' or if there's nothing at all... But I believe in some type of heaven. Sometimes I feel like so happy that I'm feeling some kind of nostalgy, I usually cry during those moments. Though I don't know if this has to do with another existence.
