I actually live near the place where I placed my first time capsule over 40 years ago. I've thought about knocking on the door explaining who I was and retrieving it. Probably never will, becasue I don't think of a time capsule as something for me, but for something for someone else to discover.

I would say plastic. It takes centuries for plastic to degrade, even when buried in the ground (that's why we recycle it). What you need to worry about is how the temperature and moisture in the ground will affect the contents. I would use some good insulating material inside a plastic container (something waterproof or water-repellent). Bury it somewhere that you know won't be disturbed by humankind's growing need for new living space and wind up inside the shovel of a backhoe or plowed up by a bulldozer.
Just had another thought. Try getting hold of one of those systems where you can put items into plastic bags and use a vacuum cleaner to suck out all the air before putting them into a larger container. The items will keep a lot better.

PLASTIC. Just about anything else will ROT while underground. Steel and other metals will RUST.
Just make sure that it seals good. it MUST be water tight. Look at the hardware store for some of that waterproof Teflon tape, and wrap the container with it.
PLASTIC will last for thousands, maybe millions of years.

A stainless steel thermos flask, any glass bottle/flagon. The best place to bury it is in the ground.
