They didn't destroy any footage. Some apparently got lost over the years. A lot was stored on magnetic tape which is no longer readable, a very common problem.

The footage was recorded in several formats.
The original telemetry tapes, which contained the raw slow-scan TV signal, along with lots of engineering data, were initially sent to archives at NASA Goddard but were then likely swept up in a massive recall of such tapes from the archives in the mid to late 1970s for de-gaussing and re-use as a cost-cutting exercise.
The broadcast footage (after processing by the scan converter) has been kept.
