Some life would continue at hydrothermal vents on the sea floor.
It is unclear how cold the surface could become.
If the surface temperature reached minus 215 ° C (420 ° F) then 99% of the air would become a liquid and except for trace amounts, there would be no remaining atmosphere. Without air the heat would radiate away even more quickly.

But it is hard for that to happen, if the sun were to run out it's energy and extinguish, will there not be a sufficient decline in it's gravity for the earth to slip out of it's orbit and drift at random into deep space ?
I don't know, as I am not scientist, its just my opinion here.

Well, ..., my speculation is that it would look a lot like Europa. Of course it would be dark (no sun right!?). The surface would be completely frozen with a surface temperature near -300F. However, below the frozen surface there would be a very different story. Don't forget that the earth generates it's own heat from a molten core and mantle and near hydrothermal volcanic vents there would be plenty of heat and a variety of life. These live forms would survive on chemo-synthesis a not photosynthesis as we do today. These life forms I mentioned exist today and can be found at the links below.
So if our Sun winked out today and our earth plunged into eternal frozen darkness chances are you and I would not survive but the creatures currently living near oceanic volcanic vents wouldn't even notice the change.

Frozen. A ball of rock covered with a thin layer of nitrogen ice, with only the occasional volcano to upset this.
