Planetary alignments do not cause the end of the world. That is a hoax.
First of all, an all eight planetary alignment hasn't ever happened in the entire history of the solar system, and according to all modern evidence...it isn't even predicted to happen in the entire future of the solar system. Typically five planets aligning is already rare enough...yet common enough for most astronomers to be able to find it occurring within their lifetime. Two, three, or four planets aligning is quite common, and is very often photographed.
Even if all the planets have the same orbital longitude...they still aren't perfectly aligned. The planets don't even all orbit the sun on the same plane...they are INCLINED off of the invariable angular momentum based plane. Only during special "seasons" do the planets actually cross through the invariable plane. AND, two planets experiencing a crossing season simultaneously is an ADDITIONAL rare event to stack upon with them being aligned. Though it DOES happen for just two planets...do a search on the Transit of Venus.

Scientifically speaking, the planets never do "align" perfectly. All of the planets have never aligned in the history of the solar system, and never will. Some planets occasionally come close together when viewed from Earth, but they also do not form a perfect line.
And these alignments have no physical meaning whatsoever.
And the doomsday claims about 2012 are unscientific nonsense. Always have been, always will be.
