I am just trying to recall a story and find the name of this bird.
When I was around the age of 8 I remember my teacher
telling us of a bird who flourished in such massive amounts
that entire cities were covered in shadow that much of a cloud.
Since there was such an enourmous herd of these birds.
However, people got tired of them and huntsman would shoot
them and they were used for food and feathers. I know its between 18th century to 20th century
that the bird went extinct to such a massive extermination of their species.
If anyone can tell me the name of this bird, thanks!

the Passenger Pigeon
a group of birds is called a flock not a herd.
(the Dodo was a flightless bird that lived on an island in the Indian Ocean)

Probably either the Dodo, or the Passenger Pidgeon. The Dodo went extinct in the 17th century, the Passenger Pidgeon went extinct in 1914. Between the two, I would say you're probably talking about the Passenger Pidgeon.

The passenger pigeon was so numerous that flocks would take 3 days to pass overhead. They darkened the sun. These are facts, not exaggeration. However, they were severely over-hunted and the last one died in the Cincinnati Zoo in 1914.
