Where am I going to store my collected butterflies

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-12-25] [Hit: ]
The main problem is museum pests like psocids and dermestids that can destroy a collection in a matter of weeks.-Get one of those push boards, they are easy and stable enough for the pin. And over that get a glass case.......
I want to put in a large shoebox I have but I also have the butterflies that are pinned through the thorax. How am I going to put them in and keep them stable? The board is too thin to pin on. Any ideas? Thanks.

Unmounted butterflies should be stored in glassine envelopes, but you might be able to make your own from the very large glassine envelopes that postage stamps sometimes come it. Ask at your local post office. Polystyrene sheets make an acceptable substitue for the usual cork as a pinning bottom. If worse comes to worse, you can glue several sheets of cardboard on top of each other and use that. Insect specimens, whether mounted or not must be kept as dry as possible and protected from museum pests. I have unmounted butterflies stored in their glassine envelopes in large mayonaise jars. Drop in a few crystals of a dessicant before you screw the lid down tight. For mounted speciment I'd suggest sealing them in a box with a dessicant, but I don't have any good ideas about how to seal them properly. I use museum drawers, but they are very expensive.
