Lately I have seen a hawk fly through my yard, just above my fence. The other birds on wires scatter just before he glides through, but I've seen him, or a bird who looks like him 4 times in the last week or so. Would it be more likely that this is a single bird, or more than one?

Many hawks are predatory birds are in fact solitary, but during breeding season , they obviously mate.
I would guess it is the same hawk, as some hawks and predatory animals prefer to hunt around an area.It may be another bird, but I doubt that different hawks would show up 4 times in one week. Perhaps it made a nest closed to it, and finds it easier to hunt around the nest..etc

Many are, especially when it is not breeding season. I'd put money down you are seeing accipiter or a merlin. When they find a food source they will exploit it. In the fall, the mourning doves come to my feeder in droves. Then some time around the solstice they they don't cus the Cooper's Hawk has been about. Eventually some come back cus they have the hawk figured out. The Chickadees are pretty good at putting out the early warning. So, the young of the year doves that made it have learned to listen for the chickadees, or so it seems.

Some are and some are not. Harris Hawks are both social and gregarious. Redtails...a little less. This site links directly with birdchannel as well as a hawk handler...right margin.
