Why has there been so many hurricanes 2018?

This is clearly an above average year, but by no means a record breaking year. While the NHC did not exist in 1938, it was a wild year for hurricanes with the first one happening on Jan. 3.
In 2005 is still considered the "record breaking" year.
1914 holds the record for the lowest number (but no NHC capable of knowing how may storms there might have been) with one.
There is a cycle in nature. It seems to build up to a peak year and then drop off. They happened before modern day weather reporting and no doubt that is the way it will continue to be.
As the NHC center suggests, part of the increased number is increased observation ability! At one time a storm could exist but not be detected. This lasted well into the 1980's I think. It took a long time to get enough weather satellites in orbit to keep track of storm cells.
