Is it true that rain is just very coarse fog?

answers:
Jackolantern say: Fog can occur in certain conditions, but rain drops have to have a catalyst to form which is mote. Mote is that stuff you see floating around when the sun shines into a window. Water can't condense into drops on it one. It has to have mote.
-
TQ say: It is not true rain is just very coarse fog.

Both phenomena involve clouds; however ... only one of them produces precipitation.
-
busterwasmycat say: that is one way to look at it. Kind of like the difference between mud and sand in a river. the bigger the individual particle, the more energy that is required to keep it from "sinking", and rain is just sinking of water droplets. Rain has bigger droplets than fog. Same stuff, different particle sizes.
-
Kano say: No fog is very fine rain.
-
CarolOklaNola say: No.

Fog is a cloud at ground level
-
Mark IX say: No. In case you haven't noticed rain doesn't hang in the air the way fog does.
