Hurricanes have long been named after women. Some say they were named after forecaster's girl-friends or wives. Others claim the naming convention started because of the storm's unpredictable nature.
This tradition continued until the late 70s when in 1979, with more women were becoming meteorologists, some saw the earlier practice of using only female names as sexist, after which the names alternated between male and female.
