Tropical storm systems such as hurricanes are named to help identify and keep track of. This is especially helpful when there are multiple storm systems occurring at the same time.

The naming system was began in 1950 and by 1953, the alphabetic name system was in place. It was not until 1979 that hurricanes acquired male names as well as Spanish and French names.
