Does an object's mass increase as its speed increases

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-03-10] [Hit: ]
As for particle traveling faster than light, this was boasted about a while ago but funny enough nothing has been heard since, there was tests to be conducted and they will take years to complete, and it is possible Einstein may have been wrong but it is just as likely this scientist trying to disprove the theory is also wrong. We will proberly not know in our lifetime. But for this argument you are both right about one thing and wrong about the other.......
My friend is saying that an object's mass increases as its speed increases which is why things cannot go at the speed of light since its mass will reach infinity by then. I think he's wrong. He also said that there are some particles that have been discovered to only go faster than the speed of light. I think he's wrong on that too. Who is correct, me or him?

This is a very complicated question and both of you are right. It is true that the closer to the speed or light traveled would mean the mass of the object increasing to balance Einsteins Equation. Which is why an object with mass cannot travel at the speed of light.

Hope this helps

Your friend is half right. According to special relativity, mass DOES increase as you get faster. It's only noticeable at speeds comparable to the speed of light though. However, there have been NO particles that have been found to only go faster than the speed of light. That's just a mathematical possibility, and a dubious one at that.

you are correct. your mass is always the same

lol. you are, unless you get bigger each time you run?
