Physics Urgent Please help!! tuning forks.

What is the original hertz of the unknown frequency? What determines what the unknown frequency is??Since its 400 + 3 or 400 - 3.. It is going to be 403 or 397.......
Suppose 2 forks are heard at the same time. One of their frequency is 400hz, and the first time, a beat frequency of 3hz is heard. Second time when weight is added to the 400hz frequency, the beat frequency changes into 2hz. What is the original hertz of the unknown frequency?

What determines what the unknown frequency is??

Since its 400 + 3 or 400 - 3.. It is going to be 403 or 397. But how can we tell which one it is?

Please help! thanks

When you add weight to a tuning fork the frequency goes down.
So when you added weight to the 400-Hz fork its frequency went down to
399 Hz which is now only 2 Hz away from the other fork. The difference was
3 Hz before adding the weight, so the second fork must vibrate at 397 Hz.
